Boy, Am I Behind!

I'm about two months behind on this blog. Things just seem to get away from me. Lots has been going on since my last post, and I finally uploaded the pictures from my camera for all that time - more than 100!

I'll have to come back soon, but now it's time for lunch and then off to school for Jeremy.....

Birthday

Well, I am now 34 years old. My birthday was February 19. We had a nice family celebration on Sunday with my parents. Brendan and the kids gave me a new digital camera, so I'll be trying that out with lots of pictures. Meredith inherited my old one, so I'll have to post a few of her pictures too. She loves taking pictures. Brendan and the kids made a Chocolate Kahlua cake. Delicious!

On Monday, Mom and I went out for our traditional birthday "tea." This year we took Meredith along as well. She loved drinking tea and eating tea sandwiches and scones.

100 Day

February 8th was the 100th day of school at North Star. Both kindergarten and first grade had a big day of celebrating. Meredith's class made (and ate!) 100 pancakes. Jeremy's class had a 100-piece snack (10 pieces each of 10 different items). They both made 100 Day projects. Meredith collected household items and displayed them by tying them on a hanger. She had rubber bands, nuts, paper clips, washers, spools of thread, pencils, screws, buttons, safety pins, and keys. She also had a collection of 100 marbles. Jeremy made a poster of ten different food items: tic tacs, rice krispies, life cereal, marshmallows, craisins, chocolate chips, pretzels, m&ms, goldfish, and popcorn. They did a great job!

Winter Concert

North Star Elementary had their Kindergarten/1st Grade Winter Concert on February 7. Each grade sang several songs and also sang one together. The kids had a lot of fun preparing for the concert and also performing. It was an excellent concert. Great job guys!

Another Day at the Zoo

This weekend we got to spend another day at the Philadelphia Zoo.

They were having an Open House for members to see some behind-the-scenes areas. So we got to see the commissary (where they store and prepare all the animals' food), the health center, the inside of the big cat area (where they are fed, etc.). We learned about "enrichment" items they use for the animals, such as hiding different scents around their enclosure, like cinnamon or oregano. The kids even made some "toys" out of boxes, egg cartons and paper towel tubes, which the zookeepers will give to some of the smaller animals to knock around and tear apart. We got to visit up close (but still behind a half door) an Aldabra tortoise--Prickles--who was injured about 13 years ago, and is unable to walk. Zoo maintenance workers came up with a dolly for him to ride. They call hime the "skateboarding tortoise." Very interesting to see these others areas and learn more about the animals' care.

We did play in the Treehouse again, and visit the usual favorites: primates, big cats. Many animals were not out; it was really cold, only about 35 degrees, so we missed the hippos, elephants, giraffes and zebras. I think we'll wait until spring before we go again.

A Cold, Snowy Day

Yesterday was cold. Yes, there was a winter storm, which of course, was cold. But we were also having our heater replaced. It was an eleven-hour job, during which, there was no heat in the house. The heat was finally back on at 7:30 last night, but it took hours for me to get warm.

On a cheerier note, we did get to play in the snow after school. It was sticky enough for a snowman and snowballs. Even Jason got in on the snowball fight.

We didn't get a lot of snow, maybe an inch. And then it rained overnight. So we still had school today.

A Visit to the Zoo

We spent a lovely day this weekend at the Philadelphia Zoo. It was a bit chilly, but there were lots of buildings to warm up in. Our favorites were the tigers, giraffes, and the play area called The Treehouse. Here are a few pictures of our day.
